Landmark Productions and Irish National Opera are delighted to announce the world premiere of a new opera by Donnacha Dennehy and Enda Walsh.

Following the sensational success of their first opera, The Last Hotel, Dennehy and Walsh join forces once again on an explosive new production, The Second Violinist.

Conducted by Ryan McAdams, The Second Violinist stars one of Ireland’s leading actors, Aaron Monaghan, in the title role, together with singers Máire Flavin, Sharon Carty and Benedict Nelson, and the 16-strong Chorus of Wide Open Opera. The production reunites the world-class creative team that was responsible for The Last Hotel – director Enda Walsh, designer Jamie Vartan, lighting designer Adam Silverman, sound designers Helen Atkinson and David Sheppard – who will be joined by video designer Jack Phelan and costume designer Joan O’Clery.  The opera is accompanied by Crash Ensemble, founded by Dennehy, which the New York Times called ‘the Irish new-music band that plays with the energy and spirit of a rock group’.

With the support of the Arts CouncilThe Second Violinist will have its world premiere in the Black Box Theatre at Galway International Arts Festival in July 2017. The full programme for this year’s Festival can be seen here.  Further Irish and UK dates will be announced over the coming months, and the opera will tour internationally in 2018.
